Browsing code

Trees, files, history and the indexes that make a repository page fast.

Every browsing route is in apps/api/src/resources/repositories/repositories.controller.ts under /api/repositories/:owner/:slug/…: contents, blob, raw, readme, commits, commits/:sha, commits/:sha/patch, branches, tags, languages, contributors, search.

All of them follow one pattern: authorize, materializer.open(repository) to get a cache current with the log, then run git through a small pure function in lib/git/:

NeedFunction
Resolve a branch, tag or shaapps/api/src/lib/git/tree/resolve-ref.ts
List a directoryapps/api/src/lib/git/tree/list-tree.ts
Read a file, detect binary, guess media typeapps/api/src/lib/git/blob/
Find the READMEfind-readme.ts
History, one commitapps/api/src/lib/git/commits/list-commits.ts
Diffs and patchesapps/api/src/lib/git/diff/diff.ts

Git runs through runGit (in lib/git/exec/) with an argv array, never a shell, and with --end-of-options before anything a user supplied, so a ref named --upload-pack=… cannot become an option.

"Last commit" per row

A directory listing shows the newest commit that touched each entry. Asking git per row (git log -1 -- path) is a history walk per file. Instead apps/api/src/services/git/path-index/repository-path-index.service.ts keeps a table of the latest commit per path, per ref, and tops it up as the ref moves:

  • a fast-forward walks only the new commits, and the request waits for it;
  • a first build or a rewrite walks the whole history in the background, and the page renders without the column until it is ready.

Every ancestor directory of a changed file is recorded too, so a directory row carries the newest commit under it.

Languages

apps/api/src/services/git/languages/repository-language.service.ts computes the language bar, using packages/languages (Linguist's path rules and colors). Languages under half a percent are dropped.

Revisions in URLs

/owner/repo/tree/feature/x/src/index.ts is ambiguous: is the branch feature or feature/x? The web app splits a path against the repository's branch list, longest match first (splitRevision). Tags resolve to their commit and are treated as detached, so they are never path-indexed.

Rendering

The web app highlights code with Shiki and renders Markdown with GitHub-flavored extensions; #123, @user and owner/repo#5 become links using packages/references, the same parser the API uses to record references.

Try it

Request GET /api/repositories/<you>/<repo>/contents?ref=main from the Scalar reference at /reference, then compare its commit per entry with git log -1 -- <path> in a clone. Same answer, one query instead of N walks.

Why does every browsing route call materializer.open first?
